Getting invited in for a job interview isn’t the same as it used to be. Today, a majority of first-round job interviews are held virtually, rather than in-person. And it really doesn’t matter what kind of job you’re interviewing for either.
But why the big change? Well, going virtual allows the hiring manager to “see” more candidates faster, and to screen out as many unqualified candidates as quickly possible…
Before any in-person interviews take place.
Today, FindYourJobNow.com will show you how to ace your virtual interview so you have a better chance at getting invited in for an in-person one… giving you a better chance at potentially landing the job too!
Now, the average virtual interview may last perhaps only 20-25 minutes. This is far shorter than typical in-person interviews, so you’ll want to take this time to be your absolute best.
So…
What should you be doing to up your chances of getting the in-person interview?
To up your chances of landing the job?
Well, here’s what to do…
First, and this may seem obvious, make sure you download the virtual meeting app the employer is using, and practice using it beforehand. They’ll likely send you a meeting invite with the date and time via email. This invite will have the app information in it as well.
Don’t assume the employer is going to use an app you’re already familiar with. The moment you get the invite… download the app and “play” around with it.
Before your interview, spend some time researching the company. Be familiar with its products or services beforehand and make a list of questions you couldn’t find answers to online, that you can ask them.
By doing this, you’re showing great interest in what the company actually does, rather than just interest in getting a job. Believe it or not, employers find this to be what “go-getters” would do. So, go get it!
Now, just like an in-person interview, you’ll want to be professional. Unless you have no choice, never use your cell phone for the interview. Instead, use a computer with a webcam, a good microphone and speakers (or headset), and be sure you’re in a quiet, private place where you can give your full, undivided attention to the interviewer.
And…
Be sure you’re dressed properly. Just like an in-person interview, your first impression matters. Don’t dress inappropriately, don’t show up disheveled, and be sure to look the interviewer directly in the eyes when both listening and speaking. And don’t forget to smile (where appropriate).
If you cannot find a good “background” for your virtual interview, find the options in the app that allow you to “create” a virtual background. Interviewers don’t want to see a load of laundry sitting on your bed. They want to see an organized professional. Show them one.
Here’s another no-brainer. Do NOT show up even a minute late for your virtual interview. Be on time and ready before the clock strikes the meeting time. In fact, you should log into the meeting at least two minutes before its scheduled.
Also to do beforehand: Since you want to make eye contact with the interviewer much as possible, have any portfolio, work examples, or resume materials you want to show them at the ready.
It’s not 1998, so you’ll want these documents prepared in digital form ahead of time, set on a tab ready to share when the opportunity arises.
Always be polite, engaging and truthful. If you sense a lull in the conversation, it’ll be up to you to keep it moving smoothly. By doing so, you’re showing that you are a great listener and have communication skills that go beyond your hard skill set. Just don’t be inauthentic about it.
Now, as your virtual interview ends, be sure to thank the interviewer for their time, but DO NOT log off until they do. If you log off first, it may give the impression that you have something better to do. Show them that getting the job is your priority.
So, there you have it! A few very simple ways to help you increase your chances of getting invited to the second round of interviews… and potentially landing the job!
