Using AI to Write Your Resume? You Better Read This First

There’s so much competition out there when it comes to getting hired for a new job. And if you’re like the rest of us, you’d do just about anything to get an edge over the other candidates.

If you want that edge, it often begins with your resume. It’s the first thing a potential employer has, in hand, to learn something about you…

The first, and maybe only opportunity you have to show off your skills before they decide whether to invite you in for an interview or not.

It’s why having a strong, well written resume can give you the upper hand when it comes to the hiring process.

Now, finding an edge with your resume could mean something like hiring a professional resume writer to help make you look as good as possible on paper. In fact, many people do use pro writers to help them, but it can cost anywhere from $100 to $400 dollars to get this help.[1]

But things have changed.

Today, there are free AI tools like ChatGPT (among others) you can use to help you write a strong, standout resume. A resume that could potentially give you the edge you’re looking for, all without having to spend hundreds of dollars.

However, …

Just because there are free tools like ChatGPT out there, you absolutely must be careful how you use them.

You see, as business consulting firm KLR notes, AI resumes can come across as impersonal, saying, “While AI tools can generate resumes quickly, they may lack the personal touch that comes with crafting a resume tailored specifically to your skills, experiences, and career goals. Over-reliance on AI-generated content could result in generic resumes that fail to highlight your unique strengths.”

And KLR is right. Hiring managers can often spot an AI generated resume from a mile away and may see the submission as lazy.

Further, KLR notes how AI generated resumes often “keyword stuff.” Meaning the content AI creates is prioritizing the job post rather than the candidate and may come across as unnatural.[2]

But even though AI resume writing may have some drawbacks, it can truly help. As long as what it generates is accurate and does not contain any falsehoods or lies, that is.

Take the AI resume generated by ABC News journalist, Jason Wheeler. He was doing some experimentation to see what would happen if AI wrote his resume, and the results were very odd.

“One of the versions it generated said I had taught a graduate-level course on A&E reporting. I have been an adjunct professor before, but this suggested I had done a lot more than that. AI also fudged my history by asserting that I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and a master’s degree in “Specialized Journalism." Neither of those is accurate,” said Mr. Wheeler.[3]

So, yes… you can use AI to generate a resume. But you must be 100% sure that 100% of it is 100% accurate. Never lie on your resume, and never let AI do the lying for you.
